JOURNEY OF JAMES BOND TUNE

John Barry composed the soundtracks for 11 James Bond movies.

He is often credited for the infamous James Bond theme that became the heart and soul of the spy movie.

But he is not the actual creator.

It was Monty Norman who came up with the tune.

But he did not earth the tune, especially for the James Bond movies.

In 1961, he composed a tune called ‘Bad Sign, Good Sign’ for a musical stage play.

The play was based on the work of V.S Naipaul named “A House for Mr. Biswas”.

It is a story of a child born in Trinidad to parents of Indian origin.

The child’s birth is considered as inauspicious, because of his extra finger.

A Pandit prophesies that the newborn will be a lecher, spendthrift, and a liar; who will eat up his
parents.

To match the situation, the lyricist came up with the following lyrics for ‘Bad Sign, Good Sign’.

“I was born with this unlucky sneeze,
and what is worse I came into the world the wrong way round
Pundits all agree that I am the reason why
My father fell into the village pond and drowned.”

Monty Norman was not in favor of the lyrics.

However, he came up with the following tune for the above lyrics.

“Dumiddy dadum dadum”.

Due to some reason, the musical did not happen.

Monty Norman was positive that he will use this tune in future.

In 1962, a producer approached Monty Norman and requested him to compose a tune for the first
James Bond film.

The film had an Asian villain and the setting was in the Caribbean.

Monty Norman already had an Asian tune in his pocket.

To match the Spy theme, he broke the notes.

‘Dumiddy dadum dadum,’ became choppier to ‘Dum diddy da dum da dum.’
