THE BLUE EARS THAT MADE MILLIONS

Chester Greenwood was born on December 4, 1858, in Farmington, Maine.

As a kid, he faced a strange problem during the winter season.

Whenever the climate became frosty, his ears would turn chalky white, then bright red and finally deep blue.

Chester's ears were the talk of the town.

This was embarrassing for him.

It was also painful for his ears to bear the cold breezes.

It was difficult for him to go out and play.

He did not like to cover his ears with a warm cloth, because it will make him look old.

And the wrapped cloth will also disturb him in his physical activities.

He did not like sitting at home and missing all the snowy fun.

He wanted some solution for his bizarre ears.

But there was nothing around to solve his problem.

On a chilly day, he went for ice skating.

After a few minutes, his ears turned deep blue.

His friends laughed at his blue ears.

And the pain was unbearable for him.

He decided that he needs to do something about it.

He thought of something that might help him.

He came home and twisted some wires into loops, and connected them with a single wire.

Then his grandmother covered the loops of wire in a fur.

He went back to ice skating and put this loops of wires onto his ears.

It worked!

His ears were warm and did not turn blue.

And he did not feel any pain.

He later added a spring to hold the loops in place.

This was the invention of earmuffs.

Now the talk of the town was Chester ear protecting earmuffs.

At the age of 18, he patented his invention.

He started his factory to manufacture the ear muffs.

For the next 6 decades, his factory provided jobs for people living in Farmington, Maine.

In Farmington, Maine, every first day of winter is celebrated as Chester Greenwood Day.

At first, they laughed at his ears.

Then they praised his invention of ear muffs.

Chester creatively solved his peculiar problem and became a millionaire.
